This league has just begun! Because this is a new league, it will be a few days before the allocation draft begins (the countdown timer above shows when the first pick will fire). This is a great time to get a team as you will be able to build it from scratch! If you don't want to wait for the draft, though, check to see if there is a team in an established league that you can take over.

Expiring Contracts

First time doing this league/site ..

Regarding players who have expiring contracts. Is there a period after the season but before free agency to sign your players before they are released to free agency? Or am I better served to just sign them before the season ends?

You're better served to sign them before the season ends - they will still be visible on your roster before the draft, but once the season rolls over any team is able to sign them.
